# How AI Now Shortlists Lawyers

## Tonight, someone who needs a lawyer will ask AI first

Tonight, a software engineer with a work permit expiring in 60 days will open ChatGPT before she opens Google. She'll type: *"Who are the best immigration lawyers near me for a work permit extension?"*

She'll get a short list of names. Then she'll ask a second question: *"Can you help me write an email to these lawyers explaining my situation?"*

Ten minutes later, a clear, well-organized inquiry lands in a few inboxes. Every other firm in her city lost the chance to compete for her, and none of them will ever know she existed.

If you run a solo or small law firm, this is the shift worth your attention this year. The way people find a lawyer has changed faster than the marketing advice lawyers still receive.

## **AI is writing the first email, too**

The people leaning on AI the hardest are often the clients firms want most. Three out of four respondents aged 45 to 60 said they would use AI to research a law firm, and so did 80% to 89% of households earning $125,000 to $200,000 a year.

So the person who finally writes to a firm has often explained their situation to a machine and checked it against several other sources. A clear, AI-polished inquiry takes seconds to send to every name on a shortlist. Firms on that list get to compete on response time and fit, and everyone else never sees the message.

## **The loss that never shows up in your reports**

When a firm loses a client after a consultation, someone notices. When AI leaves a firm off its shortlist, nothing registers anywhere. There's no missed call and no abandoned form, because the person never reached anything the firm owns.

That's what makes this loss so expensive. Your analytics count the people who arrived. They say nothing about the people who were sent somewhere else first.

Take your fee for one right-fit matter, the kind of file you'd happily take ten more of. Add what that client is worth over time: the next application in their journey and the colleagues they send your way.

Now imagine losing one of those clients every month and never finding out. Multiply it across a year, and the cost of being invisible to AI starts to look like a salary.

Referrals aren't protected from this either. A referred prospect still checks your name before they call, and more of them now check it by asking AI. If the answer is thin, or the AI suggests two other firms as well, the referral you earned can go to someone else.

## **Why strong lawyers get left out**

AI assistants build their shortlist from evidence they can find and cross-check. Expertise that lives only in your case files and your clients' memories doesn't enter the calculation.

AI assistants compare business details across Google Maps, review sites, social profiles and the business's own website, and they lose confidence when those details conflict.

For years, lawyers were told that a solid website and good referrals were enough. That advice was written for a time when clients had one place to look. Your years of wins and grateful clients now count only when AI and your prospects can find proof of them.

## **What AI and your prospects check before they contact you**

When Clio asked ChatGPT for tips on finding the best lawyer, its answer sent people to online reviews and legal directories and told them to confirm the lawyer's standing with the bar. Your prospects follow the same trail, often in the same order.

Each stop on that trail answers a question a nervous client is asking:

**Do you exist?**

- Your firm's website
- Google Business Profile and Google Maps
- Bing Places and Bing Maps
- Apple Maps

**Are you legitimate?**

- Bar, law society and regulator directories
- Legal directories
- Peer-reviewed rankings
- External publications and speaking pages

**Do other people trust you?**

- Review platforms
- News and independent media
- Community and business websites
- Forums and public discussions

**Do you understand my problem?**

- Articles and guides on your own website
- Video and podcast content

**Would someone like me hire you?**

- LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok

Each gap on this list is a small reason to pick someone else. For an immigration client who may be new to the country and working against a deadline, a missing profile or a three-year-old review reads as risk.

## **What I see when I review law firm visibility**

I've worked in legal marketing for more than 12 years, with firms in North America and Europe, many of them immigration practices. I've also started my life and my business from scratch in four countries, so I know how carefully people check before they trust a professional in a new place.

When I review a firm's online presence, the same gaps come up again and again:

- A strong offline reputation, paired with a Google Business Profile nobody has touched in years.
- The firm's name, address or phone number listed differently across Google, Bing, Apple Maps and directories.
- Website content written for other lawyers, which leaves AI nothing to quote when a client asks a plain-language question.
- A lawyer bio and LinkedIn profile that undersell decades of experience.

None of these gaps says anything about the quality of the legal work. Each one gives AI and prospects a little less to go on, and the firm with clearer evidence gets the inquiry.

The reverse is also true. One of my clients, a US visa and nationality lawyer with more than two decades of practice, had run on referrals and reputation alone. Three months into our work together,[an article written for one specific buyer](https://ethosleads.com/resources/the-lead-that-arrived-pre-qualified) brought in a prospect who laid out his nationality, residence, ownership structure and deal size in his first message.

AI drafting tools make detailed first messages like that easier to write. The question is whether your firm is one of the places those messages get sent.

## **Try this two-minute test:**

1. Open ChatGPT and Gemini, plus any other assistant your clients are likely to use.
2. Ask each one for the best lawyer for the problem you want to be hired for, in the city you serve. For example: "Who is the best immigration lawyer in Toronto for a spousal sponsorship?"
3. Ask it to draft an inquiry email to the lawyers it named, and notice whose inboxes that email would reach.
4. Ask about your firm by name: "What do you know about \[your firm\]? Would you recommend them?"
5. Write down which firms appear and which sources the AI cites for them.

Then count how many of the places listed above a stranger could find you on today.

If your firm was missing, or described with outdated details, you've just measured a loss that never appears in your reports.

## **Where Foundation fits**

I built[Foundation](https://ethosleads.com/foundation-for-solo-small-law-firms) for solo and small firm owners who have outgrown fragmented inconsistent marketing but aren't ready to spend $10,000 to $30,000 a month on acquisition. It's a done-for-you system that builds the evidence AI and your prospects look for, in the places that matter for your practice.

Here's how it maps to the questions above:

- **Do you exist?** Your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and Maps are claimed and kept active. Your website content is structured to be found and cited by Google and by AI platforms such as ChatGPT.
- **Do other people trust you?** We manage reputation signals and profile health, so your listings stay accurate and current.
- **Do you understand my problem?** Weekly blog posts and LinkedIn newsletter articles answer the questions your ideal clients ask, in their own words.
- **Would someone like me hire you?** Your LinkedIn and other social media profiles stay active, and short videos you record from our scripts let prospects get a feel for you before they call.
- **Is any of it working?** Analytics show what brings in consultations, so your next decision rests on data.

Your part takes about an hour a month: one approval block and one short recording session. Everything is written with legal advertising rules in mind, and nothing goes live without your approval. If you ever stop, you keep everything we built.

When the right clients can find and verify you, your firm's next month depends less on whether a referral happens to arrive.

## **Your next step**

Every month your firm stays hard to verify, some of the inquiries meant for a firm like yours go somewhere else. You can find out where you stand in one of two ways:

- **Check it yourself.** The[Law Firm Visibility Gap Self-Audit](https://ethosleads.com/law-firm-marketing-system-audit) takes about 10 minutes.
- **Talk it through.**[Book a marketing audit](https://ethosleads.com/foundation-for-solo-small-law-firms#book-call), and we'll look at where your firm is missing and whether Foundation is the right fit.

The engineer with the expiring work permit will send her email tonight. Make sure your firm is one of the names she's given.

**Foundation for Solo & Small Law Firm Growth** is the marketing system between referrals and scale.

It is for firms that have outgrown random marketing, disconnected contractors, and owner-dependent decision-making, but are not ready to spend $10K-$30K a month trying to dominate every acquisition channel.

If that is the stage your firm is in, you can learn more about Marketing [Foundation for Law Firm Growth](https://ethosleads.com/foundation-for-solo-small-law-firms)
