## Why one blog post brought a disability lawyer four clients (and why yours might not)

In August, we published an article for a long-term disability lawyer I work with. It answered one specific question: what to do when a specific insurer has denied your claim.

Within a month, four clients contacted his firm about that exact insurer. Each of them had a denied long-term disability claim, which is precisely the kind of matter he takes on.

The article took a few hours to research and write. What made it work took twelve months. If you have ever published content and heard nothing back, those twelve months are the part worth your time.

### Where he started, and where many small law firms are now

When we started working together a year ago, he was an experienced lawyer with an established practice. He had a website and some presence online. What he lacked was a dependable way for the right person to find him at the moment they needed a lawyer.

If you run a solo or small firm, some of this may sound familiar:

- You have published articles and cannot point to a single client who came from one.
- Referrals carry the practice, and some months they slow down for reasons you cannot see or influence.
- You paid for visibility, and it disappeared the week the payments stopped.
- You suspect the next marketing idea will end the same way as the last one.

These are symptoms. You can be an excellent lawyer and have every one of them, because they rarely come from anything you do in your practice. They tend to share one cause, and it sits further upstream.

### The cause: marketing sold one tactic at a time

In more than twelve years of legal marketing, I have seen the same cause behind these symptoms again and again. Marketing is sold to law firms one tactic at a time: a blog package from one provider, an SEO retainer from another. Each tactic is judged on its own results. When it underperforms on its own, it gets cancelled, and the next one starts from zero.

That model keeps the next tactic easy to sell. For a firm that needs enquiries to keep arriving while the owner is busy with cases, it means paying for a fresh start every few months and never getting past it.

You already know the better model from your own work. A hearing goes well because of the preparation behind it, the evidence gathered and the file built over months. Very little of that preparation is visible in the courtroom, and all of it shows in the result.

Content works the same way. A good article is the closing argument, and it only lands when the groundwork underneath it has been done.

### What the first year built

He joined the [Foundation](https://ethosleads.com/foundation-for-solo-small-law-firms), the marketing system I build for solo and small law firms. In plain terms, the first year went into four pieces of groundwork:

- **Market research and competitor analysis.** What people in his clients' situation search for before they contact a lawyer, and which of those searches other firms in his market had left unanswered.
- **The website and local SEO.** A clear structure that tells search engines the site is a long-term disability resource for his area, so new pages get indexed and found.
- **Content built for search engines and AI assistants.** Pages written and structured so that Google and tools like ChatGPT can read them and point people to them.
- **Social media and video.** Short videos in his own voice, so that someone who arrives from a search can see who he is before they pick up the phone.

Everything built during that year belongs to the firm, from the research to the videos. If he stopped working with me tomorrow, all of it would stay with his practice.

### The article

By August, the research had surfaced a clear pattern. People whose long-term disability claim is denied often search for their insurer by name, together with the word 'denied'. The competitor analysis showed that very little had been written for those searches in his market.

So we wrote a series of articles, one per insurer, each written for a person in that exact situation. The one in this story went live in August.

The four enquiries followed within a month, and every one of them named that insurer. Enquiries like these are easier to assess and easier to help, because the person has already identified their problem before they call.

A useful exercise here is to use your own figures. Take what one new client in your main practice area is worth to your firm. Then consider that a single page, published on groundwork already in place, put four qualified people with that kind of matter in touch with the firm in one month. Even if only some of them become clients, the arithmetic is easy to do.

### Why it worked

It would be easy to take the wrong lesson from this, which is to write insurer-specific posts and wait for the phone to ring. The post worked because of what was already underneath it:

- The topic came from research, so it matched a search that real people were already running.
- The site had a year of focused work behind it, so a new page on the subject could be found within weeks.
- The page was structured for AI tools as well as search engines, so it could be picked up and cited in AI answers.
- The videos and the rest of the site meant that anyone landing on the article was already on a site that looked like the right place to be.

Publish the same article on a site with none of that underneath it, and the likely outcome is a well-written page that nobody finds. When content fails to produce enquiries, the article usually takes the blame. The cause tends to sit underneath it.

### Why each new article gets easier

Once the groundwork is in place, each new piece of content is a small job with a return out of proportion to the effort. The insurer article took a few hours.

That reverses how law firm marketing usually feels. Without a foundation, every initiative starts from zero and the previous one is forgotten. With one, each article adds to an asset that is already working, and search engines pick up new pages faster because they already associate the site with the subject.

The research also decides what to write, which is easy to overlook. Because each article targets a situation the firm wants to handle, the enquiries that come in are the ones worth taking, and fewer hours go to calls with people the firm cannot help. Over time, that gives the owner something referrals alone rarely do: a say in what kind of work comes through the door.

There is also a cost to waiting, and it never appears on an invoice. Today, someone in your area is typing their exact situation into a search bar or asking an AI assistant who can help. They will choose from what they find. Groundwork laid this year decides whether your firm is part of that answer next year.

### The honest limits of one result

Four clients in a month is one firm's result, and it should be read as one firm's result.

He had real advantages going in: an established practice with cases to draw on, and a willingness to appear on camera. Results depend on the market and the practice area. Some articles produce no enquiries at all and still add to the authority that helps the next one perform.

### Where your firm stands

If you have been publishing and nothing comes of it, the article itself is usually fine. What tends to be missing is the research that tells you what to write, and a site that search engines already trust on that subject. Four questions will show you where your firm stands:

1. Do you know what your ideal clients search for before they contact a lawyer?
2. Does your website make it clear to search engines which practice area and location you serve?
3. Are your pages structured so AI assistants can understand and cite them?
4. Could someone who finds one of your articles see who you are before they pick up the phone?

Each "no" marks a place where the next article will lose the reader you wrote it for.

If you want a fuller picture before deciding anything, the [ten-minute self-audit](https://ethosleads.com/law-firm-marketing-system-audit) scores your firm's marketing system. If you are unsure where to begin, begin there.

If you already recognise your firm in this story, the [Foundation](https://ethosleads.com/foundation-for-solo-small-law-firms) builds this groundwork for you. It is designed for solo and small firms that have outgrown one-off tactics and want a steady flow of the right enquiries alongside their referrals.

The article in this story took a few hours. The groundwork under it belongs to the firm now, and it will be there under every article that follows.

**Foundation for Solo & Small Law Firm Growth** is the marketing system between referrals and scale.

It is for firms that have outgrown random marketing, disconnected contractors, and owner-dependent decision-making, but are not ready to spend $10K-$30K a month trying to dominate every acquisition channel.
